The Value of OIV-Sponsored Competitions

Placeres Magazine, edition No 09, grateful for the opportunity

I was reading the regulations for the International Wine and Spirits Competitions by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). For more information, simply search Google for "OIV competition regulations." There, you’ll find several important aspects. For example, once an OIV sponsorship is requested, an expert commissioner is appointed to verify that the rules of the regulation are adhered to. Furthermore, the organizer must provide all the necessary information for the commissioner to fulfill their duties. Competitions with OIV sponsorship are only authorized to use the organization’s name, acronym, or logo. This adds additional value to sponsored competitions, which can be confirmed on their website.

Most competitions held worldwide are organized by private institutions, which does not diminish their importance for participating producers. However, it is essential to observe if they have OIV sponsorship, as is the case with the National Pisco Competitions in Peru, initially organized by the Regulatory Council of the Pisco Designation of Origin (CRDO-PISCO) and currently by the National Pisco Commission (Conapisco). It is advisable that other competitions, such as those at the district, provincial, or regional levels held throughout the year in Peru’s five pisco-producing regions, use the OIV’s international competition standards, though without referencing or using their acronyms or logos.

In my opinion, these smaller competitions should serve as an ideal space for the participation of inexperienced tasters and/or evaluators, also known as apprentices or juniors, so they can familiarize themselves with the tasting form, always under the supervision of expert tasters.
Experiencing a tasting event is crucial to their training. It’s worth noting that in many districts and provinces in the pisco-producing regions, during their anniversaries and celebrations, producers and wine or pisco tasters are invited to participate in scheduled events, thus supporting both producers and consumers. In these competitions, we often evaluate not only piscos with the Authorization to Use the Pisco Designation of Origin (D.O. Pisco). It is common for samples from small or medium producers who are in the process of obtaining the D.O. Pisco to be presented. These samples are called aguardientes, whether they are Quebranta, Italia, Mollar, Albilla, or others. They are not yet considered piscos.

In some competitions, we have tasted over 30 samples per day, the maximum allowed by the OIV. On occasions, before finishing, the tasting director has asked us to evaluate some samples without the Authorization to Use the D.O. Pisco. Keeping our senses tuned and supporting producers is our purpose. Therefore, on the tasting form, we note that the evaluated sample does not have the D.O. Pisco Authorization, and we proceed with our work. Taste, taste, taste, and keep tasting! Enjoy pisco responsibly.

Til next time!
